About Whangamatā Medical Centre
Whangamatā Medical Centre has been caring for our community since 1980. We are a Cornerstone accredited rural general practice providing a full range of medical, nursing, and administrative services to meet the needs of our unique population. We support around 4,600 enrolled patients, with numbers rising to more than 50,000 during peak holiday periods. This highly variable population shapes the way we deliver care, ensuring we can respond to both the ongoing needs of our permanent community and the sudden demands of peak visitor periods.
Our team of 26 staff (12.7 FTE) includes four permanent GPs, supported by locums, alongside nine practice nurses and nine reception and administration staff. The workload requires at least five GPs consulting each week, with doctors typically working three to four days and sharing a 1:4 on-call roster.
WMC provides care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm, and Saturday, 9:00am–1:00pm. Outside of these hours, we run our own on-call service, always contactable through the main surgery number.
We deliver a wide spectrum of services — from urgent and chronic care to specialist clinics (including INR, Diabetes, Asthma and Skin), plus an outreach nursing contract for patients who need additional support. As a PRIME (Primary Response in Medical Emergencies) site contracted through ACC, we also provide emergency response cover. Diagnostics are available onsite with ultrasound, and plain film radiology is accessed offsite.
Innovation and resilience are core to our approach. We integrate solar power, point-of-care testing, and strong community partnerships to ensure healthcare remains reliable and equitable, even in a rural and highly seasonal environment.
Teaching and training are part of our identity — we host medical and nursing students in a supportive, real-world rural setting. As a member of the Pinnacle Midlands Health Network, our patients also benefit from access to coordinated regional health resources.
At Whangamatā Medical Centre, we combine clinical excellence, community connection, and a people-first approach, ensuring healthcare that is both responsive and deeply rooted in the place we call home.
